when she goes to work you can hear the strings, grace finds beauty in everything

I love photos of the ever-so-stunning and talented Grace Coddington. Known as the Creative Director of Vogue, as well as Anna Wintour's right-hand flame-haired woman, many of us didn't know that Grace was a highly successful model during the sixties. I was struck by her beauty when she shared photos of her modeling days with the documentary The September Issue, which I saw a few months back and have continued to watch and re-watch. She had an angular yet petite face that could off anything - from a mid sixties pixie cut to those Biba-inspired finger waves. And those signature fiery locks! Oh, how I love her hair - it's so beautiful and it's so distinctly Grace.

wrapped in songs and gypsy shawls, color up the sunshine hours

The gal that I will be channelling this summer is one of the most fabulous, incredible women that I've ever seen: Marisa Berenson. She is equal parts Talitha Getty's jetset gypsyness and Jean Shrimpton's mod model beauty. Granddaughter of the legendary designer Elsa Schiaparelli, fashion runs through Marisa's veins, as evident through her penchant for large ethnic baubles, long patterned maxidresses, crazy headgear, and those wild flowing brunette locks. One of the few successful models-turned-actors, the one constant in Marissa's life was her incredible style appeal. I can't wait to get my Berenson on!

chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains

Let's go another round and see how the style trendsetters of today match up against the style trailblazers of yesteryears, shall we?

Mr. T ... Kourtney Kardashian
On a November shopping trip in New York City with sis Kim, Kourtney looks like she raided Mr. T's jewelry box, wearing an incredible Micha Design cross necklace. I personally really dig this look - it's a definite risk, but the gal pulls it off seamlessly. Kourtney has grown to become a celebrity who isn't afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion, which I commend. (But I suppose if you're boyfriend is Scott 'I-wear-leopard-print-loafers-and-rock-Gordon-Gekko-hair' Disick, you have a superior view of what is edgy). I'm so tired of the endless stream of new 'It'-girls who wear safe, sweet little dresses and heels, and think that they are God's gift to fashion.
Maybe Scott is good for something, after all.

Penelope Tree ... Gisele Bundchen
After doing her best Bardot impression, Gisele Bundchen tries her hand at recreating the legendary look of Penelope Tree. While Gisele is arguably as influential in the fashion world (being the highest-paid supermodel ever) as Penelope Tree was during her days as David Bailey's muse, the appeal of the two women are strikingly different. Gisele is a Brazilian bombshell, whereas Penelope's ethereal alien-like beauty commanded - but did not overpower - photographs.
Personally, I find Penelope's photograph to be much more compelling - the lighting is more interesting as it casts deep shadows against Tree's cut-glass boney frame. The shape of her body in relation to the photograph of the whole is much more appealing as well - with her shoulders slightly rounded, Penelope's body subtly conforms to the circular shape of the necklace. Gisele's body is much more toned - the lighting falls against her lean muscles, not her bones, which appear softer and less contrasting under the light.

when i'm down and i feel like giving up, i think again, i whip my hair back and forth

It's much more than just a hair flip (that would be too Bieberesque) - it's a hair whip. Apparently it's quite hard to master, because there are instructions how to do it properly. If you don't feel like reading (and really - who ever does these days?), then just take some pointers from the women who have done it right

The supermodel spawn of Keith Richards and Patti Hansen, the uber cool Theodora Richards

I don't know about y'all, but whenever I'm nude from the waist down in the middle of a meadow, I love whipping my hair

Jane Birkin, who possessed the most lusted-after locks of the sixties, put her enviable head of hair to good use

The lovely Lauren Hutton in the pages of Vogue during the sixties

Amanda Seyfried is cleverly masked behind her cascade of blonde curls

Dakota Fanning tries her hand (or head, more precisely) at the whip

Like Theodora Richards, Georgia May Jagger is the daughter of a Rolling Stone (care to guess which one?) and his supermodel spouse (his former wife Jerry Hall)

Kate Moss whips and flips effectively in her Topshop campaign

She's portrayed Brigitte Bardot and been the Marianne of France, but Laetitia Casta faced her most difficult challenge of her career when she was asked to whip back and forth

The fashion house Lanvin certainly knows what the modern day woman wants - ferocious dresses and headbanging good fun - as revealed in their Spring 2011 campaign

A beautiful photograph by Lina Scheynius
Patti Hansen, alongside her then-beau Keith Richards, attending one of Bebe Buell's concerts

A strikingly non-short haired Twiggy, captured by Richard Avedon, in one of my favorite photographs ever

A young Jane Fonda does her best bombshell impression

A Janis Joplin-inspired shoot for Fashion Rocks Magazine

I was on the search for the "unbelievable" (according to a Facebook group dedicated to it) hair flip made by Gaga in the "Video Phone" video. Alas, I could not find an image. But, as you can see, Gaga hair tosses are not an uncommon phenomenon.

The lovely Jane Birkin, in the book Birds of Britain

Gossip Girl starlet Leighton Meester (with locks like that, is it any surprise she's a spokesmodel for Herbal Essences?)

Ann-Margret shows off her moves - and catches the eye of all the fellahs - in Bye Bye Birdie

The woman nine-year-old who started it all: Willow

I love this dreamy video of Lily Donaldson, captured by her father, photographer Matthew Donaldson. A two-second, 360 degree hair spin is slowed down to a hypnotic degree, turning the brief moment into a 1,000-frames-per-second work of art.

suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes

I have been having a very lovely email chat with a dolly out there who was in search of some inspirational eye makeup, similar to our beloved glam hippie. Her request got me thinking about my own makeup routine. I've been in this tragic winter rut where I feel accomplished if I swab on some eye liner and quickly pinch an eyelash curler through my lashes. Well, that will not do! I'm supplying some fab photos to help us all through the winter drear, hopefully giving you all a little inspiration to lift your spirits (and your lashes!)
With colors galore, glitter, shimmer, and tons of lashes, here are my favorite girls with kaleidoscope eyes:

Twiggy looks marvelous, abandoning her mod androgyny for a mass of curls (and stars!) and heavily contoured colors

Lauren Hutton opts for muted colors of burgundy, purple and orange for a startlingly gorgeous result

I loved when it was de rigueur in fashion of the sixties to paint your eyelids so heavily that they would droop!

Anjelica Huston rocked the scant-eyebrow look, compensating with tons of color on her lids

So many eyes, so little time! From the Pablo Manzoni crafted look in the upper left corner, to lady bug lids and petal lashes - so much inspiration!

Elizabeth Taylor is most famous for her violet eyes, but it's interesting to see how her different films - like Cleopatra and Doctor Faustus - played them up in different ways

Biba babe and supermodel Ingrid Boulting

Lovely hippie face paint

Jean Shrimpton is a constant source of makeup inspiration - her eyes are gorgeously full, it's easy to see how she captivated the likes of David Bailey and the editors of Vogue and Harper's

From lash line to eye brow, green shadow in varying shades is perfect for any occasion!

Marissa Berenson is the ultimate beauty - I love her looks here rocking silver glitter, caterpillar lashes, and electric shadow

Various covergirls of the sixties, sporting shadows, shimmers, and jewels

Pamela Des Barres (and the rest of the GTO's - check out the star eyes in the left photo!) always looked lovely with her painted-on lashes, half-moon creases, and hearts

Peggy Moffitt - always so daring, and yet so perfect. I don't think she ever misstep with her look

A Peggy-inspired film, Who Are You Polly Maggoo?, shows a young model in similar Moffitt makeup

Runway models of today sport the over-the-top glam look on their eyes

Hippie face paint - such a dream!

The rebel girl of the modeling world, Veruschka, was never one to shy away from the most daring looks and editorial creations - she always pushed the envelope of what was 'beautiful'

Another one of fashion's bad gals, Donyale Luna, rocks some serious ear gear and eye paint
