somebody help me, my neck hurt, my chain heavy

Partially inspired by Melanie Griffith in Something Wild, featured in my recent Louise Brooks post, but mostly inspired by my insane love affair with accessories, I celebrate the 'statement necklace' - the loud, large, heavy pieces that dominate any look. The louder, larger and heavier, the better.

I love anything turquoise, but I adore Raquel Welch's Native American-inspired stone necklace

Even while on the run, Faye Dunaway's Bonnie never abandons style with this gold coin necklace

Anita Pallenberg has a fabulous array of baubles

Not to be outdone by anyone, Kanye West rocks a few awesome chains

Carmen Miranda never says no to strands of beads

Twiggy incorporates her dress into a necklace into watches into magical-ness

Edie Sedgwick is never less than the ultimate It-Girl with her signature style of gamine clothes and a heavy beaded necklace

Elizabeth Taylor, the queen of jewels, has some amazing pieces on display

Judy Collins shows how strands of small beads can be made into a statement-making look

My style hero Iris Apfel

Keith Richards rocks the pirate-rocker-hot god thing really well

La pièce de résistance - Maria Felix's crocodile necklace

i want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle

There is little better on a hot summer day than to take a nice breezy bicycle ride. While I do advocate wearing a helmet for safety reasons, I appreciate the fab looks of these gals who did not have to succumb to dreaded helmet hair.

The great photographer David Hamilton captures girls on two-wheels in his signature dreamy hazy style behind the lens

Anna Karina loves to bike - and not just when her charming Bande à part costars Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey are next to her

Audrey Hepburn was often seen bicycling on the studio backlots in between filming -

The Beatles took to bikes on the set of Help

Hollywood supercouple Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart shared a deep love ... of bicycles

The beautiful Brigitte Bardot

Carole Lombard with her pet dachshund Fritz

Cate Blanchett shows off her skills

Catherine Deneuve still manages to look every inch the sophisticated French style icon, even when traveling on two wheels

Claudia Schiffer hitches a ride in one of her ads as a legendary 'Guess?' girl

France Gall, my favorite

Funny men: Bill Murray, Alfred Hitchcock, Albert Einstein, Ray Walston and Anthony Perkins in a polo game, and Bing Crosby all ham it up on bikes

A famous photo of Jacques Tati and Alain Bécourt as they ride a bike

Grace Kelly in Monaco and on the lap of Jimmy Stewart on the set of Rear Window

Jeanne Moreau and Henri Serre get a little relief from their Jules et Jim melancholia with this brief bike break

Julia Roberts ate, prayed, loved, and biked her way to happiness in her 2010 film

Both Katharine Hepburn and Veronica Lake find creative ways to sit on their bicycles

A redheaded Marilyn Monroe - first in a photo by Richard Avedon, then in an early modeling photo when she was still known as Norma Jean

Sofia Coppola's confectionary creation for the Miss Dior Cherie advertisement features Maryna Lynchuk  on a vintage Schwinn

Marilyn Monroe takes a ride with then-husband Arthur Miller

Françoise Hardy looks so untouchably cool

Groovy singers and Hollywood heartthrobs: (top row) Elvis, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen
(bottom row) Paul McCartney on the set of Magical Mystery Tour, James Dean with galpal Pier Angeli, Paul Newman and Butch Cassidy costar Katharine Ross

Yeah, this is how my best friends and I dress whenever we go out together

This is how the Tour De France used to be. Seriously.

A darling Shirley Temple - not even on training wheels!

Warren Beatty and Jean Seberg in the film Lilith

Twiggy has a ball on a bike

The loveliest ladies of film: (top row) Deborah Kerr, Geneviève Bujold, Ava Gardner, Brenda Joyce, Susannah York, Isabelle Adjani, with Yves Montand holding an umbrella overhead
(bottom row) Eartha Kitt, Romy Schneider, Ginger Rogers, Gene Tierney, Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren

Zooey Deschanel's most famous moment on two wheels came in (500) Days of Summer, where her character was called 'of average height and slightly above average shoe size', but she shows she's anything but average in real life

Then and Now: Twiggy and Kate Moss

Sure, comparisons between Twiggy and La Moss are definitely nothing new. The hysteria surrounding Kate when she entered the modeling world in the 1990s was much akin to the wave that hit Twiggy when she first burst onto the scene nearly thirty years earlier. Kate’s heroin chic charm was comparable to the freshness that Twiggy’s androgynous look offered to the fashion world – both were looks so completely opposite of the type of woman that reigned supreme during the times. Twiggy came in following the long-standing tradition of having womanly, more mature looking women in clothes that emphasized their curves; Kate entered the picture when 6-foot-tall glamazon models like Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Claudia Schiffer were the norm on the pages of magazines.
I love the photos of Kate on her 34th birthday – I’m not sure what the theme is exactly, but she looks stunning. With that mass of curls and a gold star painted on her face, she looks a lot like Twiggy on the cover of the December 1974 issue of British Vogue, with an equally wild amount of curls with stars placed throughout her hair.

when i’m in the middle of a dream, stay in bed, float up stream

This past week has been one of those terrible, long drawn-out weeks with a seemingly never-ending list of to-do's. All I want to do for the rest of the weekend is lay in my bed, eat bits of English toffee, read my stack of untouched glossies (Vogue US - I've only briefly checked out the pepto-pink Gaga but I love it already, Lucky, Marie Claire, Nylon, Elle, and Glamour) and sleep, sleep, sleep!

What are your plans (for this week/weekend/life)? I'm sure infinitely more exciting than mine!

The everlasting lovely Marilyn Monroe

Marianne Faithfull, looking every inch the rock star in late 1968

The beautiful Brigitte Bardot

Edie Sedgwick, in the Warhol film Beauty No. 2

Audrey Hepburn takes a 'cat nap' as Holly Golightly

Sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac lounge in their bunk beds

Czech cult classic Daisies (aka Sedmikrásky) features best friends who are both named Marie lounging in mid-60s fantasticalness

Edie Sedgwick ponders life as Susan Superstar in Ciao! Manhattan

Marianne, in a scene with Girl on a Motorcycle costar Alain Delon

A scene from the epic campaign for Miss Dior Cherie, by Miss Sofia Coppola

Edie relaxes with Factory friends Andy Warhol, Gerard Malanda, and Chuck Wein

Eva Green is Parisian bohémienne Isabelle in Bernardo Bertoluci's The Dreamers

How cozy does Kirsten Dunst look as the young dauphine Marie Antoinette, with her Austrian pup Mops?

One of my favorite actresses, Natalie Wood, in one of my favorite of her films Splendor in the Grass

Penelope Tree in a perfectly floral boudoir

The Indian transformation of the attic in A Little Princess completely transformed my ideas about magic, imagination, and what I wanted to decorate my bedroom to look like

Mia Farrow looks surprisingly well-rested as the photographer mistress of a Russian counter-espionage agent in A Dandy in Aspic

I wish I could be served breakfast in bed and write my correspondences while wearing a fabulously furry robe

Scarlett Johansson perfectly channels the airy, light, dreamy beauty of Sofia Coppola's creations, as done in Lost in Translation

Anita Pallenberg and onscreen love interest Mick Jagger snooze the day away in Performance

Real-life lovers Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg cozy up onscreen (but Jane - watch his arm!)

Godard muse and queen of the French New Wave, Anna Karina

Brigitte Bardot lounges in the gorgeous Italian setting of Le Mépris

Daria Werbowy, Kate Moss, and Lara Stone all cuddle up under the covers

A makeup-free Drew Barrymore lets us know how she looks when she wakes up in the morning. And the female population grows even more jealous

In Secret Ceremony, Mia Farrow clutches onto her would-be mama Elizabeth Taylor

I love how artfully arranged Marianne's hair looks on that pillow in Motorcycle
(What, don't you guys wake up in the morning looking like this, too?)

All that modeling can tire a girl out! Twiggy catches up on her rest (but still keeps those fantastic false lashes!)

Eva Green is all tuckered out in The Dreamers
