this is halloween, everybody make a scene

For some last minute inspiration, here are some of my favorite photos of costumes past:
Mary-Kate Olsen is a moon goddess

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt channel their (500) Days of Summer relationship and do Sid and Nancy up right

Anne Hathaway as Cleopatra

Audrina Patridge of The Hills pretends to be 'Like a Virgin' in her Madonna getup

Meredith Viera and Al Roker channel The Munsters for a Today Show segment

Charlize Theron - all she needs is a glamorous gown and a Venetian mask to have an elegant costume

John Legend and his date play Cowboys and Indians

Not quite sure what these costumes are - but they do look fabulous

The Beatle boys and girls at a costume party celebrating the release of the Magical Mystery Tour film

Strangely enough - same Beatle era, different costume party.

The Rolling Stones dress as circus characters for their Rock and Roll Circus special

Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung as Wayne and Garth (party time, excellent!)

Always a Halloween standard: a cute cat

Little Nell in Rocky Horror

No one can rock a sequin suit and top hat quite like 'Nell

Cutest child costume ever: a toddler's version of Alex from A Clockwork Orange

Andy Warhol and Nico dress up as Batman and Robin

Ashley Olsen, a zombie-vampire cheerleader, with Marc Jacobs (I can't quite figure out what he is though)

Classic Hollywood-does-Halloween: the Plastics wearing "lingerie and some for of animal ears"

The Beatles. And surprisingly, this doesn't destroy their rock'n'roll credibility all too much

Sophie Dahl channels Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick

Madge does Marie Antoinette. Well, her version of Marie Antoinette

Holly Golightly and Cleopatra pal around

A crucified Jesus, and statues from Dia De Los Muertos

Fabulous Frida Kahlo

Love the interpretation of the famous Annie Leibovitz photo of John and Yoko on the right

Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) get hot and heavy at the costume party

A young Drew Barrymore plays at being a cowgirl

Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd. I'm not quite sure of what they're doing

Veronica Lake in a still from I Married A Witch

Kristen Wiig does Frida Kahlo

The subway. Apparently THAT'S where The Wild Things Are

John, Yoko, Keith, Mick, Brian, and friends in their ultimate Circus gear

Evan Rachel Wood dresses up as Rocky Horror's Magenta
