Ralph Wiggum

The expression ‘an elephant in the room’ has been used several times by people to describe a reality that people hate acknowledging. When it comes to The Simpsons that elephant took over the room more than 10 years ago, then became a woolly mammoth that took over the village, than a brontosaurus that destroyed the city, and is now Godzilla. Of course the elephant or the reality I am referring to is the lack of originality and humour that has surrounded The Simpsons for more than a decade. The show simply sucks now. The jokes are dry, storylines are written by lazy writers that look to gossip shows for inspiration, characters aren’t faithful to their original idiosyncrasies, and too many episodes are dedicated to boring Lisa or Marg. Case in point: whenever Homer breaks their heart and has to spend an entire episode trying to make it up to them by showing them how much he loves them.

Fortunately re-runs and DVD’s take me back to the good old days when the show was brilliant. I call this ‘the Phil Hartman slash Conan O'Brien slash traditional cell animation slash still has some balls’ days. I figure as long as I stick to watching these classic episodes from season1-9 (and some exceptions from later seasons) this show will always be gold. Besides Homer my favourite character from the show is Ralph Wiggum. (Though I can’t forget Lionel Hutz, Comic Book Guy, Jimbo Jones, Bart Simpson, Homer’s monkey, etc...) For some reason I have always liked the dumb slow characters on shows; such as Butters on South Park and Bobby from King of the Hill.

When the Simpsons first appeared in the late 80’s early 90’s merchandise from the show was everywhere. From t-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, underwear, video games, pyjamas, and music CD’s just to name a few. Though toys were also made it wasn’t until the year 2000 when Playmates came out with a line that became popular and continued for numerous series. This line gained momentum when it became collectable because people started buying them in multiples and collecting every character. I remember the one character I wanted to buy was impossible to get, Ralph Wiggum.

Yet this collectable period was short lived because as the show declined in quality so did it start to lose numerous fans, and as such resulted in a wave of discount sell-off of figures on eBay. I took advantage of this wave last year by finally being able to purchase a Ralph Wiggum toy for real cheap. Ralph’s accessories include a bottle rocket, keys, school books and a Radioactive Man comic book. The toy itself is well done with the paint job not having any mistakes, and the sculpture being true to what Ralph looks like. I’m really glad I was finally able to add him to my collection, and hope to add more World of Springfield characters later on.

Dexter

It has become a tradition for me every year now during the winter months to curl up in bed and watch a TV show on my computer. I especially love to watch a TV series all at once, from beginning to end. I guess this habit of mine first started back in middle school when I bought my first VCR and was able to record TV shows. There’s nothing like watching a show back to back; it provides the chance for the viewer to focus all their attention on the story and pay attention. This habit also came in handy when I first saw the show 24. It’s a fast moving show and watching a whole season all at once made it more exciting. This year the show I decided to watch was Dexter. I was trying to hold out on this show for a few years, but couldn’t resist it anymore. I’m a fan of psycho killer films, so I was waiting for the perfect time to watch it. In my head the perfect time was when the show was about to end, but since it’s kind of on a break for now, I thought why not watch it now. So far I’ve only seen a couple of seasons, and I gotta say it’s pretty good and has met most of my expectations. The pro’s of the show are that it’s on a cable channel; meaning lots of violence, nude scenes, and swearing. I also like the story lines, though a little predictable they still can surprise you here and there. The con’s of the show are that the violence isn’t very graphic (which I guess only a horror film fan would care to mention), and that many actors on the show can’t act. The good news is that many of the bad actors (Dexter’s sister, cough cough), are offset by the incredible actors that where part of other great shows such as OZ and Six Feet Under. Below I have provided a link to a website where you can watch the entire series.

Christmas Ornaments: Eric Cartman

I have to be honest I’m not a big South Park fan. I mean I started watching it in the beginning, and was only able to compare it to the Simpsons. Naturally I didn’t like it, I hated the art work, I hated the storylines, and I hated how offensive it could be. However I started watching it again a few years ago, when there was nothing else on. A lot of the stuff that I used to hate about the show were upgraded, the artwork, the storylines, and although they were still very offensive, I found them to be more driven to have a message.

One character from the show which I love and I absolutely hate is Eric Cartman. He’s racist, sexist, homophobic, mean, and very selfish. Yet I can’t help but laugh whenever he’s on the show, pair him up with Butters and I’m crying in laughter. Last year for Christmas I went to my local drug store and noticed they had a Christmas ornament of him. I didn’t think anyone would buy him, so I waited until after Christmas to buy him when I knew he would be on sale. Fortunately this decision paid off and I was able to buy him at half price. The ornament was made in 2009 by American Greetings. It is a Christmas version of Eric, and he is wearing a blue sweater that features a Christmas tree and some snowflakes. He also doesn’t have on his beanie which makes him a rare collectable. From the looks of it, I assume it is made from vinyl. The paint job isn’t that great, but it still looks amazing on my Christmas tree. Here’s hoping Eric will make Santa’s ‘nice’ list this year.

The Simpsons Tattoos

One of my favorite shows of all time has always been the Simpsons. I still remember as a child waiting patiently all week until Thursday night when Fox would air new episodes and I would fire up my VCR. Over the years the show did start to lose its magic as the comedy became dry and very banal. But regardless my love for the show has kept me a faithful viewer throughout the years, and now decades. Of course some people show their love by taking it to the next level, and actually getting Simpsons tattoos. Here are some cool one’s I found on-line.

Now I would never consider having a Simpsons tattoo, but if I had to choose one I think I would definitely get one of Evil Homer.

Dragon Ball begins for me

What a glorious day it is today, for today I start my journey on an epic quest to view all the Dragon Ball series. I like to consider myself a fan of the series; however I never had the chance to watch every episode. Unlike other animated TV shows, Dragon Ball is a series that follows a continuity storyline from one episode to the next. What made it difficult for me to watch it many years ago was that it was only shown on TV and you had to watch it everyday to follow along. Even when you did watch it everyday, the channel that they would show it on (YTV in Canada) would not show every episode, and would constantly show repeats. Thankfully the internet has solved this problem by having websites that show every episode. This is convenient because you can follow along from story to story, watch it whenever you want, and can repeat any scene that you would like to watch again. While there are many links to the episodes online, the one that I am going to use is dbzremastered.com. I like it because the episodes are organized neatly, and when you view them they are nice and clear and don’t take much to load. So once again.. I am super psyched about starting this journey and I can’t wait to see them all.
